- Sponsor Spotlight: US Bank
For the past eight years, U.S. Bank has partnered with the Hands4Hope Leadership Program to help youth learn financial literacy skills and prepare for their future. In 2018, U.S. Bank awarded H4H a grant to fund the Budget and Financial Literacy Workshop, helping teens learn financial basics and how to manage finances for youth led projects with confidence. In addition to providing the grant, U.S. Bank volunteers provided financial literacy training during workshop sessions, which covered basic financial terms, planning, setting goals, developing and managing a budget and managing credit. “At U.S. Bank, our Community Possible giving and engagement platform is focused on closing the gap between people and possibility in the areas of Work, Home and Play,” said Pamela Maxwell, vice president Corporate Social Responsibility, Community Development manager. “H4H is an outstanding organization that gives youth an opportunity to sharpen budgeting and financial planning skills that will help them on their path to having successful careers. We feel fortunate to be part of this journey.” Through Community Possible, U.S. Bank invests in and supports programs and organizations across the country that help small businesses thrive, provide pathways to higher education, help people succeed in the workforce and gain greater financial empowerment. - Youth Spotlight: Avanti Ramamoorthy
Although Avanti Ramamoorthy is only wrapping up her sophomore year at Oak Ridge High School, she has held quite an impressive list of leadership positions with Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference, gaining different experiences from each one. Starting in middle school, she was PR Coordinator and then Vice President of her on-campus club. In addition to serving as a participant in the after-school Winter Boutique Committee, she has held leadership positions on other after-school committees, such as Fall Festival Committee, Ryan Christopher Hersh Scholarship Committee (two years, including current chair), and Kids Zone Committee. She is currently wrapping up her term as Oak Ridge Inspire Club Treasurer. It comes as no surprise that with all this involvement, she has logged more than 307 service hours! "Since middle school, Avanti has been on a remarkable journey toward becoming a community leader," said Nicole Craine, Hands4Hope Deputy / Program Director. "She has consistently showed up with dedication, and leads by example inspiring those around her to be their best." How did you first get involved with Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference? I first heard about Hands4Hope when I started 6th grade at Rolling Hills Middle School after my family moved to El Dorado Hills from the Bay Area. At the time, I was looking for ways to get involved at my new school and meet people, and the club stood out because it gave students the chance to actually make an impact in their community. I remember walking into my first meeting thinking it would be a good way to make new friends and feel more connected. While I did find that, what motivated me to stay was that I realized Hands4Hope was more than just a club. It was (and still is) a place where students can take initiative, lead projects, and create real change in our community. Over time, my involvement has grown into something much more meaningful than I originally thought. How have your experiences with Hands4Hope changed you? I was so shy in middle school that I wouldn’t even ask a teacher a question in front of the class, and I did everything I could to avoid situations where I had to speak up. Through Hands4Hope, that started to change. Being part of meetings, working on projects, and eventually taking on leadership roles pushed me out of my comfort zone in a way that was really meaningful. Over time, I learned how to speak in front of groups, lead discussions and take initiative instead of waiting for someone else to step in. These experiences helped me grow from someone who was hesitant to speak into someone who actively leads and contributes. Hands4Hope didn’t just help me build skills, it changed how I see myself and what I believe I’m capable of doing. Have your experiences with Hands4Hope shifted your perspectives? A shift for me happened when I realized Hands4Hope isn’t really about the final event, it’s about everything that happens before and behind the scenes. I used to think service meant showing up and volunteering, but I saw how much impact comes from figuring out what a community actually needs beforehand. That changed how I see leadership. I learned that it’s less about being visible and more about doing the planning that makes things come together and work. Today I see myself more as someone who helps build a foundation while also participating in work that’s already built. Do you have tips for other youth about getting involved? One piece of advice I would give to youth is to not wait to be invited into leadership roles, just start doing something small and visible on your own. Pick one issue you care about, find one or two other people, and take action, even if it isn’t perfect. What other activities do you enjoy? Outside of Hands4Hope, I love to play golf and practice yoga. I also enjoy taking part in or organizing STEM based activities where I can build my skills. I’m a big fan of anything that combines organization, problem-solving, and working with other people.
- Board Spotlight: Matt Hinkle
We are delighted to welcome Matt Hinkle to the Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference Board of Directors. In his professional life, Matt is Head of Global Operations at Franklin Templeton. Matt joined the Board of Directors to help the community's youth as they develop into the leaders of the future. We are grateful for the expertise he brings to the board, with his broad professional background and his personal perspectives as a Hands4Hope parent. Tell us about yourself. I’m from Cameron Park, having lived there for 22 years. My wife (Susanna) and I have been married for 25 years, and I have an 18 year old daughter (Lily) and 14 year old son (Jonathan). We also have a 5 year old labradoodle (Maggie). We like to travel as a family. Our favorite vacation destination is Hawaii and we’re planning a big trip to Italy this summer when Lily graduates from High School and Jonathan from middle school. Aside from travel, I like sports (a long suffering Sacramento Kings fan), reading (mostly history and biographies), and playing music (I’ve played guitar for over 30 years). How did you first learn about Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference? I learned about it through my daughter, Lily, who joined the program as a 6th grader at Camerado Springs Middle School. She’s been an active participant in the organization now for 6 years and I’ve really been impressed by it and by her growth. Tell us about your professional background and your position on the Hands4Hope Board of Directors. I work for a large investment management company where I lead my firm’s global operations function. This encompasses things like investment operations, accounting, tax, and shareholder servicing. I have a team of about 1,600 people all over the world so I’ve gotten to travel to some pretty interesting and cool places over the years. I really enjoy getting to know different people, cultures and ways of life. What motivated you to dedicate your time in this way? Hands4Hope has a really impressive mission in that it both directly serves the community and it helps develop young people into tomorrow’s leaders. I’ve been extremely impressed with the transformation that my daughter has undergone over her 6 years in the program and when the opportunity arose, I was happy to see what I could do to contribute and help bring that transformation to others. What is one memorable experience that stands out so far in your involvement with Hands4Hope? My daughter Lily is the current Youth Board President. Last summer, at the Endless Summer Beach Party, she had to get up and give a speech. I sat in the audience really amazed at her growth over the years, and how she had developed into a confident leader and someone who was comfortable in that environment. What do you want others to know who might be considering getting involved with Hands4Hope? The youth in this organization are doing some impressive work to improve their world. Engaging with the organization is a great way to help enable that work to continue and help youth grow as leaders. If you could learn any one new thing, what would it be? I mentioned that I’ve played guitar for 30+ years. If I could learn one new thing, it would be to be a good guitar player. 🙂
