Peyton U. and Evan C., both 8th graders at Camerado Springs Middle School, first became involved with Hands4Hope as 6th graders when they joined the on-campus club. In 7th grade, they became club leaders, serving as Secretary and Treasurer. Now as 8th graders, they stepped up when vacancies arose and are serving as their entire club leadership team, and take turns completing all leadership tasks. That means that between the two of them, Peyton and Evan share all the responsibilities of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and PR Coordinator. Together thay have more than 140 service hours so far and counting. They surely are getting a well-rounded leadership experience this year!

"These leaders were chosen for the April Youth Spotlight because they have been a dynamic team at Camerado this year," said Melissa Placek, Hands4Hope Staff Mentor for the Camerado Springs Middle School Hands4Hope Club. "Peyton and Evan both joined Hands4Hope not knowing anything about the organization and have continued to become more involved in the leadership development program and have goals to continue in high school. It has been an absolute pleasure to witness their growth in the last couple years!"

How did you first hear about Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference and what motivated you to join?

Evan: My mom told me to come to a Hands4Hope meeting. It was closer to the middle of the school year. That year the club was benefitting Foothill Dog Rescue so I thought Hands4Hope worked with animals. After coming to a meeting or two I learned more and thought it was a good place to be.

How have your experiences with Hands4Hope shaped you into the person you are today compared to when you first joined?

Peyton: I have learned about different ways to help people in our community. I think I am more aware of the needs in our community since joining Hands4Hope.

Is there a moment during your experiences with Hands4Hope that changed or shifted your perspective on how you see yourself, others, or your community?

Peyton: At the beginning of this school year when the guest Speaker from Kiwanis Family House came to talk at our club meeting. It made me realize that not everyone has a perfect situation and we shouldn’t take what we have and the time we have with loved ones for granted.

How do you see yourself being involved with Hands4Hope in the future?

Peyton: I am excited to be part of Hands4Hope in High School. I am even thinking about running for a leadership position in the High School Club next year and would love to be part of the Youth Board Executive Committee at some point

Evan:  I am planning to stay a participant in the High School Club. I am looking forward to working with past club members who have already moved on to High School.

Is there a positive mentorship moment that stands out about your youth-adult partnership experiences?

Peyton: At our last club meeting Melissa and I had a chance to talk about stuff in our lives outside of Hands4Hope. It felt good to get that stuff out and get if off my chest.

What do you enjoy doing outside of Hands4Hope?

Peyton: I enjoy playing softball for BatBusters, I am a pitcher, shortstop, 2nd base and outfielder.

Evan: I enjoy building LEGO. I just built the Daily Bugle from Spiderman.
